KiwiRail is using the long weekend to maintain and upgrade Auckland's rail network

Buses replace trains on all lines from today until the end of Monday while KiwiRail shuts the network to carry out the crucial work.

Teams are working to build a third rail line, with upgrades at Westfield and Wiri junctions.

There's also work to extend the electrified network from Papakura to Pukekohe, and elsewhere lines are closed for sleeper replacement, drainage improvements, track and signalling work.
