The eastern flank of the South Island is in dire need of rain

NIWA's latest analysis highlights an unusually dry start to Autumn along much of the country's east coast.
Meteorologist Ben Noll says in places from Marlborough to Southland - the soil moisture level is about 50 millimetres below what's normal for this time of year.
He says the South Island is going to need several soaking rainfall events to make up for that deficit.
