MetService has recorded nearly minus 8 degrees at Tara Hills near Omarama,Tekapo - with Pukaki aerodrome near Twizel, not far behind.
Meteorologist Tui McInnes says the nippy temperatures and hard frosts, are in stark contrast to Gisborne's 12.1 degrees.
He says the variation is thanks to two completely different weather systems over the country.
