Canterbury will bear the brunt of a big weather system that could pummel parts of the country with heavy rain, flooding and burst riverbanks

MetService predicts the large low will deliver more than 200 millimetres of rain on upper parts of the east coast of the South Island this weekend.
Meteorologist Angus Hines says riverbanks will be tested by the severe weather.
He says it looks like south of Christchurch will get the worst of it as rain starts piling in from midday Saturday.
The rest of the country also faces a rainy next few days.
