Traffic has come to a halt on State Highway One after slumping was identified in the bridge piles.
A spokesman for the Ashburton District Council says the bridge has sustained significant damage, and it won't be a band-aid fix.
The council is continuing to assess potential alternative routes around the bridge.
The problem is complicated by flooding debris and shingle on country roads.
That leaves no clear way yet to get to State Highway 77, along the Canterbury foothills.
