NIWA weather shows Lismore, near Ashburton, received 238 millimetres in the last two days, the same amount it received in the previous 187.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is expected to visit a number of the badly-flooded areas today.
A number of state highways remain closed throughout Canterbury, while river levels remain high.
MetService forecasts rain showers to clear today, followed by several days of fine and dry weather.
Forecaster Aidan Pyselman says the highest rainfall recordings were seen up in the Canterbury high country.
He says those areas saw up to 500 millimetres of rain.
