The Insurance Council says it will be a while before the full extent of the damage from the South Auckland tornado is known

Wind swept through the Papatoetoe area flipping vehicles and damaging fences and roofs.

The Council says people should make sure they are safe before accessing damage to their property.

Spokesperson Leah McNeil says it's still early days.
