Medsafe has approved administering the jab to 12 to 15-year-olds.
Cabinet will now review Ministry of Health advice on rolling out doses to the age group, and is set to announce a decision this month.
Following the Government's current aged-based sequencing framework - this new cohort would likely be last in line to be immunised.
But Auckland University medical Professor Des Gorman says we need a more nuanced approach than the oldest to youngest system.
He says young people may not get as sick as older people - but are more socially mobile and engaged - acting as a vector for disease spread.
