The Department of Conservation is ditching dirty energy

By the end of the year, the agency plans to phase out coal use for its 32 visitor huts and 20 staff huts, which burn the fossil-fuel for warmth.
It estimates using wood instead would create a quarter of coal's carbon emissions.
Heritage and Visitors Director Steve Taylor says in the long-term - they plan to investigate other ways of harnessing climate friendly energy.
He says in the next few months DOC will trial prototype passive solar furnaces at some huts, as part of their move toward becoming carbon neutral.
