Snow is landing in Queenstown as the polar blast drops a white coating close to sea level in parts of the South Island

State Highway 87 between Kyeburn to Outram in Otago is closed by heavy snow and the lower North Island is being whipped by strong winds and surface flooding.
NewstalkZB's George Heard says snow chains were compulsory on the Crown Range Road this morning.
He says snow's falling in the Queenstown township and it's sticking to the gondola now.
