Korean shipyard Hyundai Mipo has signed up with KiwiRail to produce two state of the art ferries in 2025 and 2026.
They'll lower emissions by 40 percent, double passenger and car capacity and triple rail freight ability.
KiwiRail Chief Executive Greg Miller says it'll be an amazing upgrade.
He says they're 220 metres long by 31 metres wide - with hulls designed for the kind of big swells seen this week throughout Cook Strait.
