The region's council consented more than 18-thousand 500 dwellings in the year to May -- up 28 per cent compared to the year before.
Mayor Phil Goff says it'll help boost housing supply and reduce unaffordability.
Building Industry Federation chief executive Julien Leys says more consents are great -- but they'll be held up at the building stage.
He says at the moment we are facing a perfect storm when it comes to getting hold of materials and people to build the homes.
