A severe wind watch is in place for Wellington and the Wairarapa from 2pm until early tomorrow morning.
Some gusts will hit 120 kilometres per hour.
The rest of the North Island will also see a strong breezes and cloudy patches.
MetService meteorologist Stephen Glassey says it's a good idea to tie down anything loose in your backyard.
Meanwhile the South Island will be wet and windy, particularly on the West Coast, followed by heavy snow for Otago, Southland, and Fiordland.
