About one fifth of the Buller District had to be evacuated over the weekend due to flooding -- forcing hundreds into evacuation centres overnight.
The Orange Warning for Heavy Rain in Buller has been lifted -- as has the heavy rain watch for Nelson.
Buller District Council Mayor Jamie Cleine says the clean up starts today, but they're worried sewage has seeped through people's homes.
He says people will be anxious to see what's happened to their individual houses, but before that, teams need to do some recon and complete rapid building inspections.
