Auckland needs to plan for future flooding
2 September 2021
The region was hit by heavy rain on Monday night and about 50 homes in West Auckland were evacuated due to flooding.
Auckland University civil and environmental engineering Associate Professor Asaad Shamseldin says planning for climate change induced weather events is needed.
He says areas which could flood should be identified and if possible not developed on.
Shamseldin says other mitigation measures may include river stopbanks, raising building's floor levels and making sure essential facilities are out of any potential flood zones.
