An investigation's been commissioned after a Covid-positive man managed to escape from an Auckland MIQ facility

An investigation's been commissioned after a Covid-positive man managed to escape from an Auckland MIQ facility

He allegedly jumped a fence from the Ellerslie facility during the early hours of yesterday morning, and was picked up by a friend and driven to his Otahuhu home.

Newstalkzb's political editor Barry Soper's seen the police email that's sent daily to the Prime Minister's office, and to MBIE which is in charge of the facilities.

Even though Jacinda Ardern had been told about the escape she didn't mention it at her daily press conference.

The man appeared virtually in court yesterday afternoon charged with breaching a health order and was remanded to another MIQ facility.

The absconder was initially remanded back to the Ellerslie facility he escaped from, but then transferred to Jet Park.
