The 36km deep quake was five kilometres north-east of Waipukurau in Central Hawkes Bay.
Geonet is describing the quake as moderate.
A number of Hawke's Bay residents with Android devices also received a Google mobile phone alert about the earthquake.
The system had previously been used to alert Android users following a quake last month.
