Police say the man started behaving erratically, after being taken to the Manukau Custody Unit for breaching his electronically monitored bail last Monday.
He died in Middlemore Hospital after injuring himself in his cell.
Police have now identified him as 21-year-old Jaye Taueli, from Auckland.
Counties Manukau District Commander Superintendent Jill Rogers says a number of investigations into the death are continuing, and the Coroner's office have been notified.
She says Police are also continuing to ensure there is support available for his family.
