The 30-year-old lock will become All Blacks captain number 71 tomorrow when they face the Pumas on the Gold Coast.
Sam Cane, Sam Whitelock, Aaron Smith and Ardie Savea - who form coach Ian Foster's other captaincy options - are unavailable due to injuries, quarantine and paternity leave.
Retallick says the main difference with the armband so far has been extra media duties.
He says he's played with some great leaders during his career.
Meanwhile, the All Blacks have confirmed Whitelock won't play in the remainder of the Rugby Championship and will instead link up with the team for their end of year tour.
Whitelock was due to enter quarantine on Tuesday in Queensland, however his exit would have left him with not enough time to prepare for the October 2nd test against the Springboks.
