Conservation efforts made by Wellingtonians are contributing to a boom in the Kaka population

Conservation efforts made by Wellingtonians are contributing to a boom in the Kaka population

The native parrots were reintroduced to the capital by Zealandia in 2002.

Since then it's now believed around three to four hundred of the birds live in Wellington.

They're becoming particularly more common place at the moment as they enter their breeding season and native trees start to flower.

Director of Zealandia Dr Danielle Shanahan says the more people make an effort to protect the environment, the better off bird species will be.

She says we'll keep seeing growth in species if people take action to conserve the environment.
