KiwiRail and Switzerland-based company Stadler have signed a long-term contract for the delivery of 57 new, state-of-the-art, diesel engines.
They'll begin arriving in New Zealand between early 2024 and 2026, replacing the South Island's current 47-year-old fleet.
KiwiRail says the engines have been used for 17 years beyond their economic life.
The contract price for the new fleet is 403-million dollars.
