Figures released by Stats NZ for the third financial quarter show it's the lowest rate on record, matching December 2007.
Employment is at an all time high of 68 point 8 percent.
ANZ chief economist Sharon Zollner says unemployment has fallen more than anticipated.
She says it's despite more people joining the labour force - so it shows just how strong labour demand is.
