A strong wind watch is in place stretching across exposed areas of Canterbury through to the Marlborough Sounds.
The warning expands further north - with wind speeds of up to 115 kilometres per hour already recorded in the Wellington area this morning.
Severe weather forecaster Mads Naeraa -Spiers says there's also heavy rain watches in place for Fiordland and Buller, and a heavy rain warning for Westland and the Canterbury headwaters.
He says its a wet day in the west and a windy day in the east - making for typical unsettled spring weather.
