Hori Pokai - A Sturdy Stubborn Chief was painted in 1919, and been kept in a private Waikato collection for a century.
It sold for 1.42 million dollars at auction last night in Auckland ... but when the Buyer's Premium and GST were added, that total rose to 1.7 million.
It's a record for a Goldie.
The work was expected to fetch up to 750-thousand dollars when it went under the hammer -- but around 30 bids saw that figure double.
