Brian Chadwick's Dragonfly-type plane went missing on a scenic flight between Christchurch and Milford Sound on February 12, 1962.
The five on board included a newlywed couple.
A few weeks back, a couple found an old seatbelt on a beach near their whitebaiting spot in Karangarua, on the West Coast.
Police are now forensically examining the belt ... and a helicopter is doing a sweep of the area today.
The Civil Aviation Authority is assisting Police.
