Actor, writer and director Rawiri Paratene has put a cherry on top of his five-decade career

He's being made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Maori, film and theatre.
Paratene is a long-time advocate for the use of te reo Maori and is a member of the Nga Tamatoa movement campaigning for teaching Maori in schools.
He has directed on language learning shows and is a trustee of the South Pacific Whale Research Consortium and of Te Paepae Ataata, which funds the development of Maori cinema.
