It's a hot day in New Zealand as most areas are forecast to hit the mid to high twenties

Lower Hutt, Taumarunui and Central Otago will exceed 30 degrees, Taumarunui is the hottest at 32 maximum degrees.

A heat alert has been issued for Blenheim which is also forecast to reach 30.

MetService meteorologist Mmathapelo Makgabutlane says it could get hotter in parts of the country where there isn't a weather station to measure temperature.

She says people should remember to stay hydrated, be sun smart and take care of those who are more vulnerable in these warm temperatures.
