Ministry of Health data shows more than 50-thousand women are still waiting for a mammogram since last year.
Auckland provides more than 50 percent of the backlog, with 39-thousand screens needed to meet its target.
Breast Cancer Foundation CEO Ah-Leen Rayner hopes the red traffic light won't cause any more disruptions.
She suspects some women will put focusing on their health on hold during this time.
