MetService has put out a red warning for Buller and Westland - with Westland in line for up to 750 millimetres of rain.
Meteorologist Alwyn Bakker says while the rain has only just started, the intensity will ramp up this morning.
He's advising residents to listen to local authorities - especially when it comes to dangerous flooding, slips or river conditions.
Meanwhile thunderstorms are beginning to brew in Fiordland, and an orange warning is in place for the Canterbury and Otago headwaters.
