Novak Djokovic will lose the top spot to Russian Daniil Medvedev after suffering a shock quarter final defeat in Dubai.
Djokovic has lost 6-4 7-6 to Czech qualifier Jiri Vesely , a former winner of Auckland's ASB Classic.
Meanwhile Michael Venus and his German partner Tim Puetz have come from behind for the second straight match to reach the doubles semi-finals in Dubai.
