Khawaja's unbeaten 127 in the country of his birth guided Australia to 251 for three at stumps on the opening day.

Steve Smith fell in the penultimate over of the day for 72 while the visitors lost David Warner for 36 and Marnus Labuschagne was run out for a duck in the first session.

Islamabad-born Khawaja made his third century in four Tests since being recalled in January after a 29-month Test absence.
