Sections of Stuart Street and its side streets will be closed to traffic some nights in the coming weeks as part of the overhaul.
The council's transport delivery manager Ben Hogan says the work involves removing worn areas and renewing the pavement.
It's part of the council's annual resurfacing programme, which this financial year will see about six million dollars spent renewing 66 kilometres of the city's roads.
