They're also being accused of assaulting the alleged burglar's girlfriend after finding the pair in the father's home.
Open Justice reports the King Country farmer William Burr and his son Shaun are on trial at the High Court in Hamilton, over the incident at Burr's home in October 2020.
The Crown alleges the teenage couple entered the home early one morning, a tussle broke out, and the burglar hit Burr on the head with a wine bottle.
It alleges the father and son responded with a "torrent of violence" before police arrived.
The court has heard the 17-year-old burglar had targeted William Burr's home twice before the incident.
