NIWA records show the weather was generally settled and warm for the first half of the month, although a heavy rainfall event in early May caused flooding in parts of the West Coast.
Temperatures were above average or well above average in every region of New Zealand -- with the nationwide average temperature at 12.6°C.
This is 1.8 degrees celcius above the 1981-2010 May average from NIWA's seven station temperature series which begins in 1909.
