But it's on a rather sombre note, with his German opponent Alexander Zverev retiring hurt, suffering an ankle injury at the end of the second set.
The sixth seeded Spaniard took the first set 7-6, and the second was set to go into a tiebreak before Zverev went down.
Despite the circumstances, Nadal is thrilled to reach the final.
Nadal will meet the winner of the second semi between eighth seed Casper Ruud and Croatian veteran Marin Cilic , which has just got underway.
