Heavy rain warnings are in place for the Tararua Range and Horowhenua, to Wellington north of Johnsonville.
Meanwhile Marlborough Sounds, Wellington, Buller, and Wairarapa could be lashed by winds up to 130 kilometres an hour today.
Speed limits have been lowered on Auckland's Harbour Bridge because of strong gusts.
