The American has carded a second round four-under par 66 to hold the lead at five-under par.
Morikawa has a one shot lead over a quartet of players including defending champion Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy.
American Cameron Young has hit an ace on the par 3 sixth hole as he attempts to make the cut.
Kiwis Ryan Fox and Danny Lee will miss the weekend.

Lydia Ko remains in the mix after two rounds at the latest LPGA event in Michigan.
The kiwi is six-under par for the tournament in a tie for 17th after a second round four-under 68.
American Jennifer Kupcho is in the lead at 14-under par.
