At least 17 years in jail for a Bay of Plenty woman who abused then murdered a five year old in her care

Michaela Barriball has been sentenced to life in prison at Rotorua High Court today, after a guilty plea.

It's one of the longest sentences for a female offender in New Zealand history, with 17 years non-parole.

The 27-year-old beat and starved Malachi Subecz in the months before he died.

He weighed 16 kilos at his death, 11 days after being found unconscious last November.
