Balancing health and privacy is a point of tension for universities
21 July 2022
A student living in Lincoln University's dorm rooms has died, the second death in the past three years.
Universities New Zealand Executive Director Chris Whelan says tertiary institutions are doing well with implementing new pastoral measures, but some people will always slip through the cracks.
He says most students are over 18 and legally adults.
Whelan says universities recognise students' right to privacy within their accommodation, but need to balance it with ensuring they are safe and healthy.
Police say the death is not considered suspicious and they've referred it to the coroner.
