Thousand of homes in Northland are without power, with some schools closed and many roads affected by flooding and slips.
The Far North's Kaeo River has spilled onto State Highway 10.
Emergency services closed Halsey St in Auckland's Wynyard Quarter this morning, after high winds appeared to damage panels outside the Park Hyatt Hotel.
An Orange wind warning is in place for Auckland and Northland, and an Orange Rain warning for Northland, Auckland, Coromandel, Bay of Plenty and Taranaki.
