In November 2019, Niklas Gebhardt drove off a Rangiora road at 130 kilometres an hour.
The car launched 24 metres in the air before hitting a tree and bursting into flames, and six year old Lachlan died at the scene.
It's been revealed that despite a confession to police, a murder charge against Gebhardt was downgraded to manslaughter.
He was sentenced to five years in prison at the Christchurch High Court earlier this month.
