Sixty new high-tech fruit fly traps are being trialled across Auckland

Sixty new high-tech fruit fly traps are being trialled across Auckland

It's in addition to the thousands of current surveillance traps around the country which have detected and eradicated the Queensland fruit fly half a dozen times.

In 2019, 10 fruit flies were found in Northcote - prompting a notice stopping movement of fresh produce from a specified zone.

Biosecurity New Zealand's Carolyn Bleach says it's critical the pest doesn't enter and spread.

She says they're protecting the billion dollar horticulture industry from the Queensland fruit fly, which is devastating for fruit and produce.
