Search teams have found a tramper reported missing this morning, after he went out for a solo walk in northern Southland last night

Police say the man was walking between the Upper and Lower Windley huts - but came across an impassable gorge.

The alarm was raised when he failed to meet up with his walking companions at rendezvous point.

He was found safe and uninjured, with the help of a Southern lakes Helicopter this afternoon.

With summer approaching, police are reminding people venturing outdoors to bring a personal locator beacons - and a means of navigation.
