The Police Association wants hasher penalties, to combat a surge in fleeing drivers in Bay of Plenty

The Police Association wants hasher penalties, to combat a surge in fleeing drivers in Bay of Plenty

Police data shows 883 drivers didn't stop for officers in the region, from January to October last year.

In 2022, that figure was 902 for the entire year - and 521 for 2021.

Police Association president Chris Cahill says he thinks penalties should increase for first-time offenders, to drive home it's a serious criminal offence.

He says some motorists have deliberately taunted Police - driving so dangerously officers had to abandon pursuits.
