The fire is contained, but not out.
Sixteen crews, heavy machinery and seven helicopters worked yesterday to establish a 50 metre edge to the 24 kilometre perimeter.
Drones were also used to identify hotspots to work on today.
A local state of emergency remains in place.
MetService Metereologist Juliane Berteolt says a cold front approaching the South Island will bring increased wind speeds into the afternoon.
She says in the evening the front gets closer, and winds will turn around and become north westerlies.
