Wellington City Council has voted to reduce the city's character areas

The Council is today debating the district plan, which will influence the future of housing in the capital.

A report by an independent panel recommended to expand heritage protection areas, but a majority of councillors have rejected the proposals.

Labour Councillor Rebecca Matthews says the Council has a moral obligation to increase housing supply.
