Pukekohe in South Auckland saw the biggest drop, sitting at 14.4 degrees - 3.5 degrees below average.
24 other areas observed record-breaking or near record lows.
NIWA says the chilly period was driven by an abnormal double-barrel low pressure system -- off the back of our El Nino summer.
