NASA reveals view of total solar eclipse from International Space Station

After millions of people looked up to the sky to view Monday's total solar eclipse, NASA has shared incredible images of what the event looked like for those in space.

While millions of people looked up to the sky to view the total solar eclipse, NASA has shared incredible images of what the event looked like for those looking down.

The eclipse was viewable on Monday local time, weather permitting, along a path starting in Mexico and then crossing through the United States and into Canada.

Sightseers gazed towards the heavens as the Moon completely blocked the Sun for more than four minutes in some places.

NASA has now shared the view from the International Space Station (ISS).

Taken by members of the Expedition 71 crew, the pictures show how the Moon's shadow, or umbra, covered portions of Canada's Quebec province, New Brunswick and the US state of Maine.

The crew took the pictures as the ISS soared 420 kilometres above Earth, with the eclipse only accessible through a pair of windows in the station's Roscosmos segment.

In some photos, NASA astronaut and engineer Matthew Dominick also shows how the Sun completed its orbital complex 413 kilometres miles off the west coast of Mexico, becoming a white sphere.

But the sight was short-lived for the astronauts as the International ISS travels at about 28,000 kilometres per hour, orbiting the earth every 90 minutes.

The expedition crew later shared video of the rare sight as well.
