A police officer has been injured trying to stop an alleged fleeing driver in Waikato

A police officer has been injured trying to stop an alleged fleeing driver in Waikato

Officers stopped a vehicle on Hamilton's Norton Road, just after 9.30 last night wanted in relation to a fleeing driver incident in Rotorua.

While Police were organising a tow, one of the occupants went back to the car and as an officer opened a door to intervene, it started moving.

The officer, realising he was at risk of being run over or pinned, got inside the car -- which then hit a stationary police car, before fleeing.

While inside, the officer was hit in the head while using a taser to try and get the alleged driver to stop.

The car lost control and crashed, with the alleged driver fleeing on foot before being found hiding up a tree about half an hour later.
