OJ Simpson's lawyer says they were "chilling" on the sofa drinking beer and watching golf two weeks before the shamed NFL star's death

The acquitted double-murder suspect passed away aged 76 on 10 April in Las Vegas after losing a prostate cancer fight, and his long-time lawyer Malcom LaVergne has now revealed how he spent his final heathy days

He was quoted by The New York Post saying about enjoying a beer with Simpson just before Easter at the country club home the athlete-turned-actor leased south of the Las Vegas Strip: "He was awake, alert and chilling.

"He's on the couch... drinking a beer and watching TV. And so that was the last time we had effective back-and-forth conversations. He's usually the one who keeps me up on the news ... so we were just catching up on the news then."

The lawyer added by 5 April a doctor had Simpson - who was diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier last year - was "transitioning" in terms of his health.

Mr LaVergne added when he last visited ailing Simpson, the former athlete was so weak he could only ask for water and chose to watch a golf tournament on television.

He said: "Of course he chose golf. He was an absolute golf fanatic."

The announcement from Simpson's family the day after his death claimed he was "surrounded by his children and grandchildren" when he died - but Mr LaVergne has since stated only one "close family member" was actually there when he passed away, though he declined to name the individual.

He added: "At first (Simpson's children) shared good OJ. But still he was famous.

"And then, in 1994 on, they kind of had to share bad boy OJ with the world.

"But at the end of the day, these children just lost a father. And they have the added burden that he is one of the most famous people on the planet, and who is polarizing and who is surrounded by controversy."

At the time of his death, Simpson had four adult children - Arnelle, 55, and Jason, 53, from his first marriage, and Sydney, 38, and Justin, 35, from his second marriage to Nicole Brown Simpson.

The pair met when Nicole was 18, and they married in 1985 - but divorced in 1992.

Nicole, 35, and her 25-year-old waiter friend Ron Goldman were found stabbed to death outside her home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, in June 1994.

Even though Simpson was sensationally acquitted of their killings after his blockbuster 11-month 'Trial of the Century' in criminal court, he was found liable for their deaths in a civil case and ordered to pay $33.5 million in compensation.

Mr LaVergne revealed Simpson was cremated on Wednesday (17.04.24) during a private gathering of friends and family in downtown Las Vegas.
